“My Tape Art is
a conversation with light.“

>>> Please tell us your professional education

and career  ...

Mark Khaisman, born in Kiev, Ukraine.

I studied art and architecture in Moscow Architectural Institute.

Now I live and work in Philadelphia, USA. I worked as an architect,

interior architect, stained glass designer, art director in animation

and artist. Never worked at the Post Office.

>>> What’s your style ...

My works are large archetypal representational images, made from

layer upon layer of translucent packing tape, applied to clear Plexiglas

and placed in front of a light box to give the image shadow and depth.

>>> Tapeart is ...

... art as any other type of art. Some artists are using paint, some stone,

some sharks or skulls and diamonds; I use tape.

My Tape Art is a conversation with light. I started it like a traditional

stained glass artist, but with tape: I found I could continue my

conversation with light, but in a more expedient, sketch like manner.

>>> How do you feel about an ever-growing interest
and commercial exploitation of street art ?

The city as a canvas is a great and ambitious concept.

I think that street art is a new incarnation of art, which is working against

the system and I hope that it will not become a new art establishment

any time soon to turn into the next cliché. It’s always a temptation:

artists want to be rebels, but successful and established rebels.

>>> A project you love to remember ...

I was given two large walls in the old factory building converted into

an art center to do an installation. I rendered 12 chairs from the

Louis XV epoch in a very large scale. It was fun to do

and the space was really converted into something else.

>>> Do you see your art as globally understandable ?

Judging by the response I’m getting from all over the world it is universal.

I myself am a person with no country; maybe that’s why I am interested in

universal subjects and a classic, representational style.

My material is pretty common too.

>>> Which aspect of your work is overlooked ?
The price tag.

>>> What  are you up to next ?

I am revisiting my cinema past right now, as I am working on

 a video project, animating my film noir tape stills and inserting them

back into the movie from which they were borrowed.

>>> Last remarks ?
Thanks for your interest.
